Sociology Department's Assistant Professor Maidul Islam says he was threatened by the Chhatra League activists

A Chittagong University teacher wrote to the university authorities seeking security after he was threatened with dire consequences for writing in favour of quota reform.

Sociology Department's Assistant Professor Maidul Islam demanded legal actions against the Bangladesh Chhatra League activists who threatened him. He also requested the university authorities to ensure a “democratic environment” on the campus.

Chhatra League activists, on the other hand, complained to the vice-chancellor that Maidul and journalism’s Assistant Professor Khandakar Ali Ar Raji had defamed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook.

The university authorities formed a three-member panel on July 19 to investigate the allegation.

Chhatra League’s Chittagong University unit's former executive member Md Ifterkhar Uddin Ayaz filed a case with Hathazari police under the ICT Act on July 23.

Maidul said he and his family had been forced to leave the campus on July 15 after receiving threats on his Facebook profile from a Chhatra League activist.

“I have not been able to return to campus since then,” he told the Dhaka Tribune.

"On July 16, 20-30 Chhatra League activists came to my department looking for me. They complained against me to the department chair that I posted anti-government remarks on Facebook,” he said.

“They told the chair to take actions against me or they will handle the matter themselves," he added.

"On July 17, a group of the ruling party student activists submitted a memorandum against me to the university’s vice-chancellor. They also declared me ‘persona non grata’ on the campus and demanded I be sacked,” Maidul said.

“I saw no other way and requested the university to ensure my safety so that I can return to my classroom," he added.

He rejected the allegation that he had defamed the prime minister. “I have never written anything derogatory against the prime minister,” he said, accusing the Chhatra League activists of misinterpreting his Facebook post.

"I always believe in the spirit of our Liberation War and the ideology of Bangabandhu. I have been writing against anti-liberation forces since my student days. But it is a matter of great sorrow that I have been branded an agent of Jamaat-e-Islami,” he said.
