Road crashes kill 11 across the country

More than 30 people have also been left injured

At least 11 people were killed in separate road accidents in eight districts on Thursday night and Friday leaving more than 30 people injured.

The injured were admitted to different hospitals.

Road accidents are still taking place every day even though a nationwide movement of students demanding safer roads had brought the transport sector to its knees last week.

The students started demonstrating in Dhaka from July 29 after two college students were killed by a speeding bus on the capital’s Airport Road.

The number of such incidents is, however, yet to decrease across the nation, although the government and transport owners met the demands of the students.

In Gaibandha, two persons, including a child, were killed and seven others injured when a bus overturned after crashing into a roadside tree on Dhaka-Rangpur Highway at Sadullapur upazila’s Palongpara early Friday, police said.

In Khagrachhari, a pedestrian was killed and 22 students of Chittagong University were injured when the bus carrying the students lost control and overturned on the Khagrachhari-Chittagong Road in the Sadar upazila.

The accident happened in the Boro Bridge Ansar camp area in Alutila around 10am on Friday, police said.

In Dhaka’s Savar, a man was killed after two trucks collided on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway on Friday morning.

Savar Model police station OC Mohsinul Kadir said the deceased was one of the truck drivers.

Sadar police station OC Alamgir Hossain said the accident happened when the girl was crossing the road on her way home.

In Manikganj, a teenage girl was killed and three others injured after a jeep plunged into a roadside ditch on Friday.

Borongail Highway police outpost in-charge Yeamin Uddoula said the accident took place in the Shibalaya upazila’s Mushuria area, reports UNB.

In Lalmonirhat, three people were killed on the spot after a speeding truck hit the rickshaw they were riding on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari Road in the BGB canteen area of the district town around 9:30pm on Thursday.

The district’s Superintendent of Police SM Rashidul Haque said the truck driver and owner both were detained after the incident. The truck was also impounded.

In Sunamganj, a worker was killed and at least seven others injured when the lorry they were on lost control and fell into a roadside water body in the district town’s Iqbal Nagar area around 7:45pm on Thursday.

A number of workers also went missing after the vehicle submerged. Rescue efforts were on.

Sadar police station OC Md Shahidullah said that two lorries carrying electric poles and workers, were competing on the road, and one of them had ended up crashing.

In Cox’s Bazar, a man was killed after being run over by a microbus in the Jail Gate area around 10pm on Thursday.

Sadar police station OC Farid Uddin Khandaker said the vehicle, owned by an NGO, was impounded, but the driver had managed to flee.
