The namaz-e-janaza of veteran journalist and Daily Samakal editor Golam Sarwar was held with state honour in his home village of Jumadi in Barisal on Wednesday, two days after he passed away in Singapore at the age of 75.

As part of an emotional farewell, Sarwar’s body was flown by helicopter to Jumadi in the district's Banaripara upazila at around 2:20pm.

From there it was taken to Banaripara Model Union Institution, a local secondary school, where the local police formed a guard of honour.

The namaz-e-janaza was held at around 3:05pm and featured tributes from Sarwar's brother, Golam Saleh Monju Molla, and his son, Golam Shahriar Ronju.

Local lawmaker and Awami League's Barisal district unit Secretary Talukdar Md Yunus, and Barisal 3 lawmaker Sheikh Tipu Sultan, also addressed the people who attended the namaz-e-janaza.

Sarwar, who was also the president of the Editors' Council, had been suffering from heart disease and respiratory complaints when he suffered a heart attack on July 29 and was admitted to Labaid Hospital in Dhaka.

In order to receive better treatment, he was transferred from there to Singapore General Hospital, where he lost his fight for life on Monday.

Family sources said Sarwar will be laid to eternal rest today at the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard in Mirpur.
