Sheikh Hasina also took part in a special prayer for the August 15, 1975 victims
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has paid her respects to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Gopalganj’s Tungipara on the martyrdom anniversary and National Mourning Day.
She placed a floral wreath at the grave of Bangladesh’s founding father on Wednesday morning. The prime minister then stood in solemn silence.
A smartly turned-out contingent gave a guard of honour as a bugle played the Last Post.
Bangabandhu and most of his family members were assassinated on August 15, 1975.
Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangabandhu, her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, and others, held a special prayer for the August 15 victims.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader paid tribute to Bangabandhu on behalf of the party. Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also paid tribute—followed by the ruling party’s Gopalganj units and associate organizations.
Ministers, parliament members, chiefs of the three forces, senior Awami League leaders, senior military and civil officers, were also present.
The prime minister joined a special prayer at the mausoleum—marking National Mourning Day, organized by the cabinet division and Gopalganj district administration.
Sheikh Hasina flew back to Dhaka around 12:30pm.
