Thousands of home-bound people have been stuck on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway since Monday morning due to a 20-kilometre tailback in the district.
Local sources said the tailback had been created in Tongi, Cherag Ali, College Gate, Maleker Bari, Bhogra bypas, Board bazar and adjoining areas on the highway causing sufferings to the people going on Eid holiday.
A passenger named Helena Akter of Rajib Paribahon said it had taken nearly six hours from Tongi bazar to Gazipur intersection to cross the highway.
Another passenger Suruj Mian said he started his journey around 5:30am in the morning from airport. He has travelled one-hour distance in 5 hours.
SI Faruk Hossain of highway police said that a number of unfit passenger buses and three wheelers started to increase from early morning which created the traffic jam.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Saleh Uddin said they were trying remove the gridlock as soon as possible.
