High Commissioner of India in Bangladesh, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, visited Barisal on September 8 and 9.
During his visit, he attended a number of events, said a press release of the High Commission of India.
On September 8, a function had been organized in Barisal to distribute scholarship cheques to 120 wards of freedom fighters. Currently, two schemes are being implemented and 12,621 students have been benefited so far. An amount of TK21 crores has been disbursed to date.
At a similar function in Sylhet, the Government of India awarded scholarships to the wards of freedom fighters in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the Liberation War of Bangladesh, reports UNB.
Shringla also hosted a dinner that evening which was attended by a wide section of Barisal’s society, including political leaders – Mayor-elect of Barisal, Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, Mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal, and Chairman Sher-e-Bangla Foundation A K Faiyazul Haque Razu – were present.
The Divisional Commissioner, senior officials from the administration, academics, intellectuals, cultural personalities, and freedom fighters also attended the dinner.
On 9 September, the High Commissioner inaugurated the Handicrafts Fair at Brajamohan School, in Barisal, in the presence of the Mayor-elect Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah.
The High Commissioner also visited Kabiguru Rabindranath Degree College at Kuriana, Barisal. He paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at the Satindranath Memorial Gandhi Ashram Trust at Bakerganj.
At the end of the tour, the High Commissioner visited Mehendiganj upazila of Barisal at the invitation of Shri Pankaj Debnath— member of National Parliament of Bangladesh. There, Shringla interacted with the freedom fighters and the local populace.
