BNP on Monday alleged that police arrested around 200 leaders and activists from the party's human chain programs across the country.

"Police arrested these leaders and activists on their way to and from our peaceful human chain programs in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka, and in different districts, including Gazipur, Bagerhat and Meherpur on Monday," said BNP Senior Joint Sectary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters, he alleged that many common people and the drivers of some BNP leaders' vehicles were also arrested by the law enforcement officials, reports UNB.

Rizvi alleged that though the government gave BNP permission to stage the human chains, police arrested their party men without any provocation as its programs were peaceful everywhere.

He said that the police swopped on their party activists even before the start of the programs and arrested them indiscriminately at the behest of the government.

The senior BNP leader strongly condemned and protested the arrest of their party men and demanded their immediate release.

BNP organized human chains in Dhaka and different districts and cities on Monday demanding release of the party’s incarcerated Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Khaleda is currently serving a five year prison term at the old Dhaka central jail in a corruption case.
