Barisal residents marched through the city’s streets, staged a human chain protest and held a rally in front of the Ashwini Kumar Hall on Tuesday  protesting the construction of a restaurant near the mass killing ground.

Apart from locals, freedom fighters, journalists, cultural and environment activists took part in the protest organized by Barisal Liberation War Mass Killing Ground Preservation Committee.

Speakers at the rally said the Pakistani occupation forces used the WAPDA complex as its base where they tortured and killed people during in 1971.

The place should be preserved as part of history, they argued, adding that the construction of the restaurant near the killing ground should be stopped immediately.

They gave a 48-hour ultimatum to evict the restaurant’s structure and warned of intensified agitation from tomorrow if their demands are not met.

The speakers also demanded implementation of the master plan for beautification and construction of monuments at the mass killing ground.

Earlier this week, a team led by Prof Muntasir Mamun visited the place and expressed solidarity with the protestors.

Aktar Faruk Shahin, the owner of the under-construction restaurant, claimed that he started construction after taking lease from Barisal City Corporation.

BCC estate officer Md Shakil, said he knew nothing about the lease process and no file or plan was approved by them.

Barisal Deputy Commissioner Habibur Rahman said the land was owned by the government.

“The BCC is not authorized to lease the land,” he said. “The administration will conduct eviction operation against the illegal construction going on there.”
