A total of 23 people have died in Satkhira in the last 15 days, of which six were murdered.
The police on Tuesday however claimed that the law and order situation of the district was in their control.
According to sources from the Satkhira District Police and local newspapers – from September 4 to Tuesday(September 18), six people were murdered; two committed suicide; three died in road accidents; three people drowned; four were killed by lightning; one died due to snake bite; one got electrocuted and three bodies were found from different parts of the district.
On September 9, Jatiya Party Kaliganj Upazila General Secretary and Krishnanagar Union Parishad Chairman Mosharraf Hossain was gunned down by a gang of miscreants.
He was shot dead while sitting in front of the Union Jubo League office in Baliadanga Bazar. Those involved fled the murder scene.
On September 11, a drug addict named Tumpa hit her mother Momtaz Begum with a rod and killed her.
Satkhira Additional Police Superintendent (Sadar Circle) Merina Akhter said: “Apart from one or two isolated incidents, the law and order situation is in district police’s control. The numbers of theft, robbery, hijacking and murder have decreased from before.”
She added: “We are working on to make the situation even better and we will take stern measures against crimes which were committed.”
