The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, in association with Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, has distributed over 10,000 family kits among poor families in Cox’s Bazar.
The kit distributions were carried out in Moheshkali, Kutubdia, and Chakaria on Thursday, reports UNB.
Altogether 30,000 households received the family kits, which include two floor mats, a bucket, tarpaulin, rope and wire.
Other UNHCR supports to Bangladeshi host communities include programs to assist with livelihoods, distribution of energy-efficient LPG cooking stoves, the rehabilitation of schools, improvement of roads and drainage, and the installation of solar lighting.
The distributions are among a number of programs being taken to assist some of the poorest local communities that have hosted the Rohingyas refugees and have been affected by the refugee influx, said UNHCR.
More than 700,000 Rohingyas fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar’s Rakhine State since late August last year after the security forces launched a brutal crackdown on the ethnic minority.
The UN has described the military offensive, which triggered the exodus, as a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing.”
