A schoolgirl has been gang raped while being held at a local councillor’s house in Pabna’s Sujanagar upazila.
The incident occurred around 10:30pm on Thursday, confirmed Sujanagar police station Officer-in-Charge Shariful Alam.
The girl, a student of Class 7 at a local school, has been admitted to Pabna General Hospital in critical condition.
The girl’s elder sister filed a case against four people over the matter including Anai Kha, 35, and Nayeb Ali, 34, on Friday.
Police arrested Anai on Friday afternoon, but Nayeb remains in hiding.
According to the case file, the girl is originally from Natore and was living with her sister to continue her studies. She had an ongoing relationship with a Class 9 student from a local school.
The girl ran away from home with the boy to get married around 9pm Thursday after stealing Tk20,000 and three bhori jewellery from her house. On the way, Anai and Nayeb picked them up and took her to the house of Nayeb Ali, who happens to be local councillor Shaheb Ali Shahebul’s brother.
Around 10:30 that night, 6-7 people, including Nayeb and Anai, gang raped the girl and stole her money and jewellery. During the ordeal, the boy was locked inside another room.
The suspects then contacted the girl’s family members and asked for a ransom of Tk20,000 for the young couple. The family then rescued her and brought her home. When her condition deteriorated, they took her to Pabna General Hospital on Friday, the case file said.
Shariful Alam also said the girl has been unable to identify the other perpetrators.
“Anai is in our custody, and we are trying to catch the others,” Shariful said.
