The Bangladesh Medical Students’ Society (BMSS) is hosting the fourth National General Assembly (NGA) on October 5.

In preparation for the event, the BMSS is currently offering training to medical students through a pre-NGA workshop, which will host a total of seven training sessions.

The first four sessions were conducted yesterday at Mohammadpur's Opener Solution. The sessions will cover –teaching trainees about organization management, training new trainers, public health leadership training, and the Youth Act for safe abortion.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, BMSS President Tanvir Hyder, who is also the former general assistant for the Asia-Pacific region in the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA), said this training would help students to learn to treat their patients better and handle public health projects with ease.

“Our aim is to provide a platform for medical students which will allow them to convey their voice to all levels of the government and other relevant stakeholders in the medical educational area,” he explained.

Tanvir said through programs like these, they intended to give medical students a ground to take initiatives to build a better Bangladesh, and provide them with a link between medical students from different medical colleges and international organizations, for cultural exchange and bridging cooperation between them.

The Pre-NGA events will also host training sessions on clinical uses of ultrasonography on Wednesday at the Center for Medical Ultrasound and Doppler (CMUD), on research methodology at the Daffodil International University, and on basic surgical skills at the Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital (BIRDEM) on October 4.

The NGA will be held on October 5 at Daffodil International University and will be attended by Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The event will host a thematic symposium where participants will be introduced to the theme through presentations, field work and interactive sessions, thereby facilitating the communication between members from different institutions.

Keynote speeches will be delivered by a panel of speakers from the national authorities. The purpose of this symposium is to allow the attendees learn about the theme in depth.

The event will act as a medium for exchanging ideas and information on important scientific and health issues, and it will be open for medical students across the nation.

Regarding the role of BMSS, its Vice-President of Internal Affairs Rahmat Rashid Siam said they wanted to act as a platform for medical students to discuss, formulate policies and conduct workshops on community health, global health, education and science.

“We want to play a key role in the professional development of medical students, by involving them in national and international training programs,” added Rahmat.

The BMSS is dedicated to the improvement of health care and health care delivery systems as well as medical education. It is an independent, non-political, non-profit volunteer-based welfare organization for Bangladesh’s medical and dental students.

BMSS is a full member of the IFMSA since March 2013.

IFMSA is a non-governmental organization representing associations of medical students which is one of the world’s oldest and largest student-run organizations. It represents, connects and engages every day with medical students from 137 NMOs in 127 countries around the globe.
