Case filed against 90 Chittagong Shibir men over explosives recovery

A case was filed under the Special Powers Act, and Explosives Act

Police have lodged a case after recovering cocktails – improvised explosives – during a raid at Chittagong City headquarters of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Bangladesh.

All of the accused in the case are members of Chhatra Shibir. Chittagong City's south unit President Abdul Jabbar, Secretary ASM Raihan, and Treasurer Hasan Elahi were accused in the case—among others.   

Chawkbazar police station Officer-in-Charge Nezam Uddin said a case was filed under the Special Powers Act, and Explosives Act.

Chawkbazar police station Sub-Inspector Anisur Rahman lodged the case Saturday night against 52 named and 38 unnamed people.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police raid

Earlier on Saturday, several explosions rocked the Chittagong city headquarters of Islami Chhatra Shibir during a regular Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) block raid.

The incident took place in Chandanpura area of Chawkbazar around 7:45pm, CMP Additional Commissioner Amena Begum told the Dhaka Tribune.

She said the blasts inside the Shibir office occurred about 15 minutes into a regular block raid of CMP in that area and afterwards led police to raid the building.

Later, CMP Deputy Commissioner Mehedi Hasan said that six handmade bombs were recovered during the search one of the office’s rooms.
