At least 10 people have been injured in a clash that broke out outside Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK) in Savar on Sunday between the men who filed a case against the institution and the employees of the center.
The injured were admitted to the Gonoshasthaya Kendra and the Savar Upazila Health Complex.
Confirming the incident, Ashulia Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) (Investigation) Javed Masud told the Dhaka Tribune that they rushed to the site and brought the situation under control.
“We have deployed more personnel to make sure no other clashes break out. We are not investigating the incident,” he said.
Gonoshasthaya Kendra employees, locals and the police said the incident broke out after the Cotton Textile Mill authority held a press conference in front of the main gate of the People’s Health Academy (PHA) Building regarding the allegations of land grabbing by the institution.
After the press conference, they said the Cotton Textile Mill authorities including Mohammad Ali, Nasir Uddin were trying to enter the PHA Building and were prevented by the guards.
They said that this is when the clash broke out between the two groups where they were throwing bricks at each other. Ten people were injured during the exchange.
When asked about the incident, Golam Mortuza Babu, assistant register of Gonoshasthaya University, said: “The people from the cotton mill assaulted our female security guards when they tried to enter the PHA building.
“This is when people from the Cotton Textile Mill including Mohammad Ali, Nasir Uddin attacked our workers. Four worker of Gonoshasthaya were injured in this incident.”
However, Mohammad Ali accused Gonoshasthaya Kendra of grabbing many people’s land saying: “This is why we organized a press conference yesterday and their people attacked our workers. Six people from our side were injured in the incident.”
Both parties – Gonoshasthaya Kendra and the three businessmen with two landlords – claim the land is in their possession and have accused the other party of “trying to grab the land.”
Mohammad Ali, Hassan Imam, Syed Salim Ahmed, Nasir Uddin, and Kazi Muhibur, filed cases against Gonoshasthaya Kendra from October 15-24.
“At last, Gonoshasthaya Kendra on Thursday filed the case over the attack on the GK building” said, Gonoshasthaya Kendra Executive Director (administration) Saiful Islam Shishir.
