Police have arrested two men for their suspected involvement in the killings

Three members of a family have been hacked to death with sharp weapons and one other injured by rivals over a land dispute in Lalmonirhat’s Aditmari upazila.

The gruesome incident took place in Taluk Haridas area of the upazila’s Sarpukur union around 7am on Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Jalil, 49, son of late Jalal Miah, Golam Rabbani, 50, son of Abdur Gafur, and Sahidar Rahman, 52, son of Asir Uddin.

Rabbani and Sahidar were Jalil’s cousin and uncle, both from the maternal side, respectively. All of them were from Sarpukur.

Jalil’s son Jahidul Islam, 22, was rescued with critical injuries and admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Two men, identified as Khabir Uddin and Shamsul Islam, were also arrested in a case filed later in the day by Jalil’s other son Jahangir Alam at Aditmari police station, said its Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masud Rana.

The district’s Superintendent of Police SM Rashedul Haque confirmed the matter and added that they were conducting drives in the area to arrest the other accused.

OC Masud said that seven people were named in the case alongside five or six unnamed persons in the case.

Those named in the case included one Abdul Khalek’s sons Wali Ullah, Atikul Islam and Al Amin, Khalek’s brother Khabir Uddin Kerani, Shamsul and his sons Joj Mia and Khorshed Alam.

“After an inquest, the bodies were recovered and set to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital for autopsies,” added the OC.

According to victims’ family members, witnesses and police, a dispute between Khalek and Jalil had taken shape over the ownership of a piece of land, after the latter bought it two months ago from one Abdus Salam.

Sequel to the enmity, Khabir, Wali, Atikul and Amin, armed with sharp weapons and assisted by Shamsul, Joj and Khorshed, on Tuesday morning attacked and killed on the spot Jalil, Rabbani and Sahidar on that land.

They also left Jahidul with serious injuries.

Jalil’s uncle Ramzan Ali, who witnessed the killings firsthand, claimed that he had tried to mediate the confrontation at the beginning. “But Wali did not listen to me and hacked Jalil twice, killing him on the spot.

“Then Khabir stabbed Jahidul with a spear when he came to save his father. Wali went on to hack Rabbani, while Atikul and Amin stabbed Sahidar on his abdomen with another spear. Afterwards, they fled the scene.”
