Former state minister of Education ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has been sent to jail in Chandpur after he was arrested in Chittagong by Detective Branch (DB) of police.

Milon, also the former Chandpur 1 member of parliament, was sent to jail by the Senior Judicial Magistrate Shafiul Alam after he was produced at the court on Friday afternoon.

Milon was shown arrested in a murder case, attempted murder, and an extortion case.

Milon’s lawyer Adv Kamrul Islam said: “Previously, Milon had been in jail for one-and-a-half years — after that he went to perform Umrah, where he became sick and underwent treatment for a long period of time.

“After he returned to Bangladesh, he wanted to be present in court but, due to an unavoidable circumstance, he was not able to do that.”

Adv Kamrul also said: “All the warrants did not came from Kachua police station and the cases in which he was shown arrested are already at trial. A hearing date was sent on Sunday by the court.

“We have appealed to the court to provide him with proper health care as he is very sick. The court told us to submit an application.”

BNP District Convener Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik and Milon’s wife and some other BNP leaders were present at the court since the morning.

Earlier, Milon was arrested in Chittagong’s Chawkbazar area at a relative’s, Shah Alam’s, home. Abul Kalam Azad, Officer-in-Charge of Chawkbazar police station, stated this when confirming news of the arrest on Friday.

A joint team of Chittagong and Chandpur police conducted a drive at an apartment of Chatteswari area, under Chawkbazar police station, and arrested the BNP leader around 2:30am.

Milon had been staying at the apartment since November 13. He came to Bangladesh in mid-November to contest in the upcoming 11th general elections for Chandpur 1 constituency.

The BNP leader is a warranted suspect in 17 cases and he has remained absconding for the last five years.
