Jamaat-affiliated candidate’s lawyer detained in Satkhira

Abu Bakar Siddique’s family alleged that a team of Detective Branch (DB) of district Police picked him up from the Satkhira court premises at 2pm on Wednesday

Detectives have detained advocate Abu Bakar Siddique, a lawyer who is currently handling the cases filed against 20-party nominated candidate Muhaddis Abdul Khaleque from Satkhira 2 constituency.

Abu Bakar’s family alleged that a team of Detective Branch (DB) of district Police picked him up from the Satkhira court premises at 2pm on Wednesday. 

Police, however, claimed advocate Abu Bakar Siddique, who is a permanent resident of Satkhira city, was facing an arrest warrant. 

Muhaddis Abdul Khaleque, who was the at the helm of Jamaat-e-islami’s Satkhira unit for years and also an incumbent member of central working committee of the party, has been accused in more than 40 cases and is currently locked up in Satkhira prison.

Apart from representing Jamaat-affiliated candidate Muhaddis Abdul Khaleque, Abu Bakar also represents another Jamaat nominated candidate Gazi Nazrul Islam from the Satkhira 4 constituency. 

In response to the arrest of his lawyer, Gazi Nazrul Islam said the district Returning Officer SM Mostafa Kamal assured him that the Election Commission will look into the matter once a formal complaint is filed.
