BNP nominee accuses Awami League activists however no evidence of arson was reported by the police

A group of miscreants reportedly torched the BNP upazila office on Thursday night in Sariakandi upazila of Bogra district.

According to locals, a television and other office furniture were damaged in the fire. The fire-fighters arrived on the scene and put out the fire.

Apart from this, two mechanical parts shops adjacent to the office also caught fire. They claim the fire destroyed parts worth Tk2 lakh.

BNP nominee for Bogra 1 constituency, Kazi Rafiqul Islam, visited the site on Friday afternoon and accused Awami League activists of their involvement in the incident.

He said this was deliberately done in an attempt to disrupt the election atmosphere and that they had organized a protest rally over the incident, he said talking to reporters.

However, Upazila Awami League Joint Secretary Matiur Rahman denied any knowledge regarding the unfortunate accident.

According to Sariakandi police station Officer-in-Charge, Al Amin, the fire had most likely originated from the mobile servicing shop beside the political office and no evidence of arson was found at the scene.

No case had yet been filed at the police station regarding the incident, he added.
