Police in Sunamganj have arrested five fugitives who have been charged with crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
Shalla police station Officer-in-Charge Md Ashraful Islam led raids at different areas of the upazila and arrested four of the five accused around 8:30pm on Wednesday.
The arrested suspects are Md Zubair Monir, 72, Zakir Hossain,70, Siddiqur Rahman, 73, Md Tota Mia, 72.
The other suspect, Md Abdul Jalil, 72, was arrested during another raid in Derai upazila, led by Derai police station Officer-in-Charge Md Mostafa Kamal.
Confirming the matter, Sunamganj Superintendent of Police Md Barkat Ullah Khan said that the policesuccessfully caught the five suspected war criminals acting on tip-offs.
“All war criminals will be brought to justice to face trials for their crimes against humanity,” he added.
According to the case details, the five arrestees stand accused of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971. They were allegedly involved in looting, murder, rape and torching houses of general people, especially the residences of minorities. The case was filed with the International Crimes Tribunal,under case number 05/2018,in Dhaka.
