Govt agrees to build hostel for tea workers’ children

Underprivileged and meritorious children will be able to reside there for free, or at a minimal cost

A contract was signed between representatives of the government and the Bangladesh Tea Workers’ Union, on Thursday, to build a 10-story, multifunctional, hostel for the children of tea workers.

Director General of Labour Department Shibnath Roy, and Rambhajan Kairi, general secretary of the Bangladesh Tea Workers’ Union, signed the contract on behalf of their organizations in the city.

Under the contract, the government will fund the construction of the hostel on land owned by the union, where underprivileged and meritorious children of tea workers will be able to reside for free, or at a minimal rate.

The divisional labour department will oversee the operation and maintenance of the hostel for three years. It will consist of an 11-member committee, comprising members of the government and the union.

After three years, it will hand over operating duties to the central executive committee of the union.

Among others, Makhon Lal Karmakar, president of the union; Mahbub Reza, president of Bangladesh Tea Estate Staff Association; and more; were present during the ceremony.
