RMG workers’ held demonstration against wage discrepancies for the sixth day

RMG workers protesting in Ashulia were forcibly dispersed by the joint efforts of Industrial Police and Border Guard Bangladesh around 12pm on Saturday.

The incident took place on Saturday morning, when hundreds of RMG workers staged demonstrations for the sixth consecutive day, blocking the Dhaka-Tangail highway in protest of discrepancies in the new wage structure.

Ashilua Industrial Police Superintendent of Police (SP) Sana Saminur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune: "Workers of some 35 nearby garment factories had blocked the road and vandalized vehicles. To avoid further hostility, BGB forces were deployed around 12pm."

Police used water cannons and baton charges to disperse the gathering and contain the situation, he added.

Agitated workers of some 35 garment factories took to the street and vandalized ten vehicles on the highway around 11am. At least 10 people, including passengers, were injured as the RMG workers clashed with police in Ashulia.

Traffic movement on the Abdullahpur-Baipail Highway was suspended until noon as a result of the unrest.

Meanwhile, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested five people in Tongi, for their alleged involvement in vandalizing 9 factories in the area.

According to RAB 1 Commanding Officer Sarwar Bin Kashem, the five were arrested during a raid by RAB from 2am to 4am on Saturday.

The arrestees have admitted their involvement in the vandalism and realize that they have done wrong, the RAB 1 CO added.

Previously, RMG workers staged demonstrations in Savar, Gazipur and different parts of Dhaka from December 6-10, protesting discrepancies in the newly-announced wage structure.

The government, garment industry owners and workers' representatives have been trying to solve the problem for the last few days. However, RMG workers have continued protests.

The workers took the streets after claiming that the authorities have been delaying the implementation of their demands for the past two months.
