On Sunday, another search operation will start in Chandpur

The rescue mission for the missing trawler and 20 labourers has ended in Munshiganj with no sign of them.

The search operation ended on Saturday as rescuers failed to find the 20 missing  men and trawler.

Gajaria Naval Police Outpost In-Charge, Md Mizanur Rahman, confirmed the matter.

He said: “From Sunday another rescue operation will start in the Chandpur Gharnal area.

Rescuers were unable to trace the boat at the place shown by survivors of the trawler mishap.”

Gajaria UNO Hasan Sadi said: “There were no signs of the missing men in the Munshiganj section of the Meghna River. The men who survived the accident, want us to look for the missing in the Chandpur section of the river and so do we.

Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Sahila Farzana said: “Today the rescuers searched an area of 4sq km but there were no signs of any men. We will conduct a new search from tomorrow in Chandpur.

Members of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) police, Naval Police, Fire Service, Coast Guard, and  Bangladesh Navy divers took part in the rescue operation after the trawler collided with a cargo ship and sank in the Meghna River.

Earlier, a case was filed against the trawler’s boatswain Md Habib, 55, from Madaripur; owner Zakir Dewan, 45, from Narayanganj, and the unnamed captain of the cargo ship by a survivor of the trawler. Labourer Shah Alam filed the case with Gajaria police station.

A nine-member probe committee was also formed to investigate why the trawler capsized.

BIWTA, the Fire Service, river police, and the Bangladesh Coast Guard have also formed a search party to locate the trawler with the help of a side-scan sonar system.

The probe body, which was formed on Thursday night by the Munshiganj district administration, is headed by Additional District Magistrate Mobassherul Islam.

On Friday, he confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune that the committee had been formed.

Previously, on January 15, the trawler—carrying 34 workers from Comilla—sank in the Meghna River around 3am after it collided with an oil-laden tanker while heading to Fatullah in Narayanganj.

Although 14 workers managed to swim ashore, the remaining 20 went missing. All the workers were from Pabna and Sirajganj districts.
