Planning Minister MA Mannan on Friday said he will bring up in Parliament, the issue of women migrant workers being tortured abroad.

Speaking as chief guest at a debate competition, MA Mannan said: “I regret hearing stories of Bangladeshi women becoming victims of torture abroad.”

“Discussions will be held in parliament in this regard, and steps will be taken to ensure that proper services are provided to Bangladeshi migrants at respective embassies,” he added.

The semi-final of an inter-university debate competition was organized by Debate for Democracy at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation in Dhaka (BFDC).

Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) beat Eastern University (EU) and moved on to the finals, debating in favour of the topic, “overseas employment on sustainable development”.

BUBT debaters argued that overseas employment positively impacts the 17 goals of sustainable development set by the United Nations, saying that remittances contribute to the economy as a whole, as well as to family members of migrant workers who benefit from better education, health care, and housing.

EU students, on the other hand, claimed that overseas employment is not sustainable enough, as Bangladeshi migrants often fall victim to various scams.

They recommended exporting more manufactured goods, like garments, and leather items, instead of manpower. They also suggested importing more industrial machinery that would enable development of more factories, thus, creating ample employment opportunities.

Hassan Ahmed Chowdhury, Debate for Democracy chairman, played the roles of speaker and moderator.
