The microbus caught on fire after becoming entangled in the back of a covered van in Mirsarai

Three people have been burned to death in a road accident in Mirsarai on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway on Tuesday morning.

The accident took place around 7:15am at Nizampur area under Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Sitakunda Fire Station In-Charge Wasi Azad said: "Three people, including the microbus driver and an elderly couple, were burned to death in the accident."

The deceased couple have been identified as Abdur Rahman, 65 and Kulsum Begum, 55.

The identity of the microbus driver is yet to be confirmed.

He said: "There were a total of seven passengers in the microbus. We were able to rescue two boys alive. They have been admitted to a nearby hospital.

"The rest of the passengers were able to escape by themselves."

The rescued—Rony, 10; and Russel, 12— are the grandchildren of the deceased couple.

How did it  happen?

According to Fire Service sources, both the microbus and the covered van were heading towards Chittagong; and the microbus was driving behind the covered van.

At one stage, the front portion of the microbus became entangled in the back of a covered van; which resulted in the covered van dragging the microbus for 100 metres on the busy Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.

Later, the microbus caught fire and three people burned to death on the spot.

The driver of the covered van fled the scene.
