Marking the Chawkbazar fire incident, survivors of the Nimtoli fire tragedy have said the recurrence of fire incidents can only stop when proper legal initiatives are taken by the government against the people who responsible for the recent, devastating, fires.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Manik Mollah—a relative of Abdul Rahim who died in the Nimtoli tragedy in 2010—said: “Owners of the buildings are mainly responsible for the incidents because they rent their houses to the businessmen for more money. This is how chemical warehouses are established in Old Dhaka.”

“My uncle died when he was returning home from the mosque after his prayers. Till now, our family members cannot forget about the incident,” he added.

Mamun, a fruit vendor, said: “I lost my son to the Nimtoli fire tragedy. He died immediately after the fire broke out. Now we only have photos of my dear son.”

Mamun suggested that the authority start monitoring existing illegal chemical factories in Old Dhaka.

“The chemical business is a tradition in Old Dhaka. It has now become a family business. Apart from the government, public awareness among the people is also essential to minimize such fire incidents,” he added.

Shibly, a resident of Old Dhaka said: “Rents are cheaper in Old Dhaka compared to other parts of the city. So businessmen take this opportunity to profit more.”

The people of Old Dhaka do not want the fire incidents to recur as they have lost loved ones in the Nimtoli and Chawkbazar tragedies.
