In yet another case of love breaking barriers, a 29 year old Brazilian teen found her better half in Sylhet and married him last week in Zakiganj upazila last week.

Lucy Calen, 29 met Shahed Ahmed, a member of Bangladesh Ansar and resident of Bilpar village under Zakiganj upazila, on Facebook 18 months ago, when love blossomed between the two.

She took a leave of absence for 15 days from her job as a helpline executive at a hospital in Brazil, and came to Bangladesh on February 20, where she was received at Sylhet airport by Shahed.

Shahed later brought her to Sylhet to meet his family, where she converted to Islam at a court the next day, taking the name Khadiza Begum.

They then got married following Islamic rituals.

After talking to this correspondent on Friday, Lucy said she had come to Bangladesh with her family’s consent to marry Shahed. They were scheduled to accompany her but could not come as they were unable to obtain a visa in time.

The natural greenery of the region has impressed her so far, she said.  She regretted having to leave her in-laws and other family members, but promised to return to Bangladesh soon.

Shahed said took the help of Google Translate during their virtual communication, which also helped him improve his English language skills.
