Police have detained one of the suspects in Rangamati, over the recent murder of Belaichari upazila Awami League President Suresh Kanti Tongchanga.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Rangamati Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge(OC) Md Jahedul Haque said: “On a tip-off, Snehashish Chakma alias Ashish, 43, was detained from the city’s Bonrupa area around 5:30am on Saturday, for his suspected involvement in the murder of Suresh Kanti Tongchanga.
“The suspect is presently under the custody of Rangamati Kotwali police station. Ashish is a listed accused in the case filed over the murder of Suresh, and has confessed his involvement in the killing during initial interrogation.”

Ashish is the president of Bolpia Adam Businessmen Welfare Association, and is involved with a local political party.
Meanwhile, upazila Jubo League Finance Secretary Monir Hossain filed a case on Saturday accusing 20 people, including the Belaichari Upazila Chairman Shuvo Mangal, of murdering Suresh Kanti Tongchanga.
Belaichari police station OC Md Parvez Ali confirmed the matter.

On March 18, at least seven people, including two election officials and four Ansar and VDP members, were shot dead and at least 26 others injured, in a gun attack in Rangamati.
Within 15 hours of the incident, Belaichari upazila Awami League President, Suresh Kanti Tongchanga, was also shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Alikhong area of Rangamati.
