Barisal Metropolitan Police on Wednesday suspended two cops, Assistant Sub Inspector Aminul Islam, and Constable Riazul Islam, for an arrested kidnapper escaping custody.
On Tuesday morning, Dukhu Mia escaped from a Shere Bangla Medical College Hospital bathroom after he tried to slit his throat when he was caught by police in Barisal and was brought to the ENT ward, said Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Barisal Kotwali police station.
Nasiruddin Mallik, assistant commissioner of Detective Branch (DB), and spokesperson of Barisal Metropolitan Police, said: “An investigation is underway to see if there was any negligence of duty on the part of the suspended cops.”
Dukhu Mia was taken into custody in a child kidnapping case lodged with Fatullah Model Police Station. He was arrested from the Palashpur slum of Barisal city on March 4 by the police.
During his arrest when he tried to slit his throat, he was taken to the hospital under police custody. Three weeks later, while he was still recovering and still in handcuffs, he escaped from the bathroom window.
When he went to the bathroom on Tuesday police after a while, discovered the bathroom window grille was pried open and Dukkhu Mia was gone!
