Home minister: Khaleda could be moved to Keraniganj prison any day

The BNP chief is being kept in the old central jail in Old Dhaka since her conviction in a corruption case in February 2018

Update : 28 Mar 2019, 02:14 AM

Incarcerated BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia could be transferred to the new Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj from the old jailhouse any day, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said.

The former prime minister, sentenced to up to 17 years, is being kept as the lone inmate at the old central jail on Nazimuddin Road in Old Dhaka since her conviction in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case in February 2018.

“The facility where she has been kept will be turned into a museum, so it would not be possible to keep anyone there once the work begins,” Asaduzzaman said on Wednesday afternoon during an event at Savar's Ashulia.

“That’s why Khaleda Zia could be shifted to the new jail in Keraniganj any time whenever necessary,” he added.

The minister, however, did not spell out any date for the move.
