Police have detained two youths, supporters of the independent vice-chairman candidate, for allegedly exploding improvised bombs in an attempt to occupy a polling station in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj.

The incident occurred at Borab Government Primary School polling centre in Sadipur union of the upazila around 1am on Sunday.

The detainees are Sumon, 21, from the upazila's Kanchpur union, and Khokon, 20, along with their motorcycles.

Presiding officer Mujibul Haque confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, saying: "The incident took place last night. We went to the spot when the law enforcers on duty heard a bomb blast and informed us.”

"Arriving at the centre, we found that a group of youths were planning to explode more bombs and further sabotage the centre," he said.

He said the situation was now under control, and people have been casting their votes peacefully.

Sonargaon police station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that the duo were supporters of the upazila's vice-chairman candidate Omar Babu alias Babul Hossain, an Awami League-backed independent candidate, who was running in the polls under the tubewell symbol.

He said a group of youths, with explosives in their possession, were planning to occupy the polling centre. However, police chased them while they were trying to flee after blasting the improvised bombs.

Law enforcers managed to detain two of them, while the others escaped.

Additional Superintendent (Administration) of Narayanganj Police Monirul Islam said: "We have filed a case against the duo in this regard."
