Narayanganj trawler capsize: Remaining two bodies recovered

Selim's body was handed over to Sonargaon police station

The bodies of two missing persons – a policeman and a banker – has been found days after a trawler capsized in the Meghna River in a storm. 

The body of Selim Mia, town sub-inspector (TSI) of Narayanganj city police, was recovered from the Meghna-Sitalakhya estuary at Bandar upazila’s Dighirpar area on Wednesday, confirmed Sonargaon police station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman.

The body was returned to Sonargaon police station, where his first namaz-e-janaza was held. 

After the funeral prayer, Selim’s body was handed over to his relatives. He will be buried at Gopalganj's Gopinathpur after a second namaz-e-janaza.

Meanwhile, another body of a presiding officer – manager of the Meghna branch of United Commercial Bank Ltd – was recovered from the river on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Borhan Uddin, 38, hailing from Ramnagar village in Raipura upazila in Narshingdi.

A team of the coast guard recovered the body on Tuesday, said Lt M Matik, station commander of Coast Guard’s Pagla unit of Narayanganj.

On Sunday, a trawler capsized in the river during a storm around 7:30pm in Charhogla area of Narayanganj. 

The vessel was carrying 19 people who were returning from Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj after completing their election duties at the Charhogla Government Primary School polling centre, during the fourth phase of the ongoing upazila parishad elections. 

Sixteen people were rescued immediately, while three others were missing after the incident.

The body of an Ansar member, Rita Akhter, was found floating in the Meghna in Gazaria area of Munshiganj around 6am on Monday.
