Two killed in Thakurgaon, Barisal road accidents

Two more were injured in the Thakurgaon accident

A woman died after being hit by a speeding truck near Goreya in the sadar upazila, on Thursday.

The deceased, Julekha Begum, 35, was a resident of Birganj upazila’s Jharbari area in Dinajpur.

Thakurgaon Sadar police station OC Ashiqur Rahman confirmed and said the woman with her husband and infant child were heading home on a motorcycle. The motorcycle was rear-ended by a speeding truck and killed Julekha on the spot.

Her husband and their two-year-old child were severely injured and are undergoing treatment at Thakurgaon Modern Sadar Hospital.

Police seized the vehicle but its driver and helper managed to flee.

Meanwhile, a man died after being run over by an Eagle Paribahan bus on the Barisal-Patuakhali Highway in front of Sonargaon Textile Mills, on Thursday.

The deceased, Shah Alam, 50, was a security guard at the mill.

Barisal Kotwali police station OC Nurul Islam said: “Shah Alam was run over while crossing the road by the speeding bus plying on the Dhaka-Kuakata route, around 7am.”

After being brought to the Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH), the doctor on duty at the emergency ward declared him dead and sent the body to the morgue.

Locals blocked the highway in protest but withdrew within an hour after police seized the vehicle and detained its driver from the Lebukhali jetty area near the highway.

A case was lodged and the driver was sent to jail after being produced before the court on Thursday afternoon, the police sources added.
