A doctor of Chattagram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital has allegedly misbehaved with a patient for not knowing Bangla.

The incident occurred on April 4.

The patient, Tarun Kanti Chakma, is from Bagaichhari,Rangamati. His mother tongue is not Bangla, and h does not reside in an area where Bangla is widely spoken.

Tarun Kanti Chakma’s son, Aliyen Chakma, authored a post on Facebook—detailing the experience— and it caused outrage among the public.

It is alleged that Dr Moslehuddin Shahed misbehaved with Tarun as he could not communicate well with the physician in Bangla. At one point, the doctor allegedly expelled him from his chamber.

The hospital authorities have formed a committee to investigate the allegations raised by the patient and his son.

Dr Nurul Haque, Director of Chattagram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital told the Dhaka Tribune that they had already formed a three-member committee, headed by a senior physician of the hospital, to investigate the allegations.

"The aggrieved patient has formally lodged a complaint with the hospital authorities regarding the misbehaviour of a physician. Receiving the complaint, we have formed a probe committee.

“The committee has been asked to submit the report as soon as possible. Necessary action will be taken against the physician if he is found guilty," said Dr Haque, adding that the alleged offending physician Dr Moslehuddin Shahed, who is now on leave, will rejoin on Tuesday.

The alleged physician did not receive phone calls for comment.
