A husband in Manikganj burnt his young, pregnant wife, pouring hot water on her.
The incident occurred at the victim's own home in Beutha of Manikganj Sadar upazila on April 7.
The victim, identified as Lata Akhter, 19, is now undergoing treatment at the 250 Bed District Hospital in Manikganj, with 30 percent of her body burnt, sources confirmed.
According to a case filed with Manikganj Sadar Police station by the victim's father, Bisha Kha, a year ago, Sujan Mia, 23, son of Abdul Baten, married Lata Akhter in Beutha village.
After the marriage, Lata was often a victim of physical and mental torture by Shujan who is a mason.
With Lata four and a half months pregnant, on April 7, Shujan told Lata to bring hot water and a towel (gamcha) for his bath. After obeying the order Shujan beat Lata, saying the towel was dirty.
Then Shujan poured hot water all over her body resulting in burns on her back and both hands.
In hospital, Lata said her husband often beats her over various accusations, and on Sunday he poured hot water over her.
Medical officer Lutfar Rahman of the 250 Bed District Hospital in Manikganj said: “30 percent of the woman's body is burnt. She is out of risk at the moment but these kinds of patients are kept under observation for at least 72 hours.
Manikganj sadar police station OC, Rakibuzzaman said, after the incident the victim's father filed a case.
“Police was sent to the hospital and incident site at once after the incident report was filed. Efforts are underway to arrest the accused,” the OC added.
