School was suspended after a portion of a classroom ceiling collapsed at a primary school in Barguna’s Sadar upazila.
The incident occurred three days after a third grader was killed and five others injured in a similar collapse at another primary school in Barguna’s Taltali upazila on Saturday.
The roof caved in, at the Central Barguna Govt Primary School in Amtala Par, around 9:15am on Monday. The students narrowly escaped injuries.
According to witnesses and teachers, a section of the ceiling collapsed during a class in session.
A student named Rifat had been sitting in the spot of the collapse a minute before the incident. He came to school without uniform, and was sent home to wear it and return. The roof collapsedwithin a minute or so after his departure from the classroom.
Headmistress of Central Barguna Govt Primary School, Shamima Nipasaid, no improvements were made in the risky building in the past two years.
“Even though senior officials were notified of this building with pictures of the building, no action was taken,” she said.
She also said, the students are in shock over the incident and classes have been suspended.
Barguna Sadar upazila acting education officer, Arifuzzaman said, they heard about the incident and visited the site.
“The school has been asked to put up tarpaulin over the collapsed roof temporarily,” he said.
Barguna District Primary Education Officer, MM Mizanur Rahman said: "We have visited the site. I will talk with the engineers to ascertain whether it is still useable for holding classes.”
Responding to a question on whether thestudents would continue their classes in the risky building, he said, after consulting with the engineer, we will decide if classes will be held there or will it be arranged somewhere else.”
It is to be noted that, Mansura, 10, a third-grader was killed and five others were injured as a portion of a ceiling collapsed at Choto Bogi PK Government Primary School in Taltoli upazila, around 12:30pm on Saturday.
A two member probe committee of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, tasked with finding the reasons behind the school building collapse, while talking to journalists and locals said: “The building was constructed with poor quality materials.”
