A search and rescue operation is continuing for a missing worker
A passenger remains missing, after a launch and a barge sank in the Passur Channel of Sundarbans because of a Nor'wester in the region.
The missing person is a worker named Shah Alam. The launch ML Akter was carrying labourers, while the barge was carrying fertilizer. Both vessels sank around 8:30pm on Tuesday.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Mongla Port Harbor Division Operator Syed Ahmmed said: “The launch was heading to a foreign ship through Herbaria area. The vessel sank after being battered by the storm in the Passur River.
“The workers were being taken to the ship for unloading fertilizer. All but one worker managed to swim ashore after the incident. A barge carrying fertilizer also sank, but all workers abroad the vessel survived.”
A search and rescue operation has been launched to find the missing person.
Responding to query, Coast Guard Staff Officer (Operations) Lt Josel Rana said: “The search and rescue operation for Shah Alam has continued since last night. The launch remains under water, while the barge has been pulled ashore.
“The Coast Guard has joined forces with Bangladesh Navy and Mongla Port personnel to search for the missing man.”
