Nusrat murder: Demo staged in Tangail seeking justice

Demonstrations have continued across the country, seeking justice for the murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi, an Alim examinee from Feni.

School and college students in Tangail formed a human chain at the Nirala intersection of Tangail town, at 11am Friday, protesting against her murder and demanding punishment for those involved.

Nusrat, a student of Sonagazi Madrasa in Feni, died on Wednesday night at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) burn unit—from burn injuries she sustained on April 6—when she was set ablaze by reported supporters of the madrasa's principal, Md Sirajaddaula.

Among the protesters in Tangail: Joint Convener of Tangail Chhatra League Tanvirul Islam Himel; members Milon Mahmud and Imdadul Haque Sajjad; Sadat College student Masud Ahmed and Sarker Emon; and others, gave speeches.

"We seek justice for Nusrat's murder," the speakers said. "The prevalent rapes and murders across the country have worried us all. 

"While the country is moving forward under the leadership of our prime minister, our society is becoming tainted by the activities of these backward people," they said.

The protesters demanded an example be set in the society by hanging Nusrat's murderers.

Ever since Nusrat's death, thousands of emotional and outraged citizens have been forming human chains in several districts, demanding justice.

Until now, police have arrested 10 people in connection with the murder, including the main accused—Md Sirajuddaula—and his student Nuruddin.
