The deceased was the general secretary of Bogra sadar upazila BNP
A local BNP leader has been hacked to death by unknown assailants in Bogra.
The incident occurred on the main street in front of the Nishindara Housing Estate in town, around 10:30pm on Sunday.
The deceased, Mahbub Alam Shahin, 55, hailing from Dharampur area of Bogra sadar, was general secretary of the Bogra sadar upazila unit of BNP.
Following the attack, bystanders took him to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Sanatan Chakrabarty, additional superintendent of police (ASP) and also media wing chief of Bogra district police, said: "Shahin would hang around and meet with his friends and colleagues in the market area near Nishindara Housing Estate. About five to seven people attacked Shahin with sharp weapons when he was returning home."
He added that Union Parishad Chairman Alimuddin could not recognize anyone despite bearing witness to the attack.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashraf Ali visited the site of the incident with a police team following the murder, but could not identify any of the attackers after inspecting CCTV footage from cameras of nearby buildings.
Mahbub's brother, a vehicle business owner, Ferdous Rahman, speculated: "Shahin is a joint-secretary of vehicle owners. He used to provide legal support to a group of vehicle owners, which agitated rivals. Some supporters of the rivals vandalized his car on Sunday. He had also been receiving death threats for a few days."
The victim's brother, and his son Sayem, also suspect the involvement of local leaders, with whom Shahin was in conflict about buying a pond in Snighdha housing estate area.
Bogra advocate bar association has refused to provide any legal support to the killers.
They demanded the arrest of the killers within 24 hours.
BNP declared four-day-long protests for his murder.
Shahin's body was buried beside his father’s grave at the family cemetery, and his second namaz-janaza was held at Dharmpur field. His relatives and political activists were among those present during the burial.
ASP Sanatan said the reason for the murder has yet to be discovered, and an investigation is underway.
