Historic May Day being observed across the country

This year’s theme is “Build Worker-Owner Unity, Take Oath for Development”

The historic May Day is being observed in Bangladesh—and elsewhere across the world—with due respect and various events.

The day has been observed across the globe since 1886. It commemorates the supreme sacrifices of the workers of Hay Market, Chicago—in the US—for an eight-hour work day and upholding the rights of the working people.

To press home their demands, many workers died as a result of bomb attacks and police atrocities on May 1, 1886, and the following days.

The theme of day, this year, is “Build Worker-Owner Unity, Take Oath for Development,” reports BSS.

To mark the day, different government and socio-cultural organizations, political parties, worker groups, trade unions, and professional bodies have chalked out elaborate programs, including rallies and discussions.

Prime minister and president issue messages

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion of the historic May Day.

They extended their greetings to all working people of the world, including Bangladesh, wishing success for all programs on the occasion.

Labelling the day-labourer and working people the key driving forces of country’s development, the president stressed establishing workers’ rights—including providing them with fair wages as well as ensuring a safe and hygienic working environment—to attain the sustainable development goals (SDG) and enhance productivity, reports BSS.

The head of state called upon the toiling masses and workpeople to work jointly to materialize the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who envisioned the people’s economic freedom alongside the political independence.

In her message, Sheikh Hasina said: “Imbued with the spirit of the holy May Day, the workers and owners should devote themselves to increasing national production by maintaining good relations.”

The head of the government hoped that due to the united efforts of all, including workers, the government would be able to build a non-communal, hunger-and-poverty-free, happy, and prosperous “Sonar Bangla” as dreamed of by Bangabandhu.

The prime minister wished the May Day 2019 events great success.

Commemorating the historic day

Akin to previous years, the Labour and Employment Ministry has drawn up two-day programs to observe the day at the state level.

A colourful rally is supposed to begin at the Dainik Bangla crossing in the morning and end in front of the National Press Club, on Topkhana Road, after parading different thoroughfares via: Rajuk Avenue, Bangabandhu Avenue, Zero Point, and the National Press Club.

In observance of the day, a discussion will be held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, at 4pm, Wednesday. The discussion will be followed by a cultural function, reports BSS.

On May 2, the ministry will arrange a seminar on workers’ rights at the National Press Club at 3pm marking the historic day.

May Day is a public holiday. All public and private offices, courts, banks, mills, and factories remain closed.

Bangladesh Television (BTV), Bangladesh Betar, and other private television channels and radio stations are airing special programs marking the day. National dailies published special supplements commemorating the day.

On the occasion, the Labour Building (Srama Bhaban), Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, different street islands of the capital have been decorated with banners, festoons, and placards.

The organizations and labour bodies which have drawn up various programs include: Bangladesh Jatiya Sramik League, Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, Jatiya Sramik Jote, Trade Union Kendra, Jatiya Party, Workers Party of Bangladesh, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Union, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Gano Forum, National Awami Party, and different garments organizations.
