BIWTA suspends water transport services for Cyclone Fani

The Mongla and Payra maritime ports have been advised to hoist danger signal no. seven

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has suspended all water transport services and operations, across the country, because of Cyclonic storm Fani. 

Fani is likely to hit the coastal zones of Bangladesh on Friday morning.

Kazi Wakil Newaz, secretary of BIWTA, told Dhaka Tribune: "All types of water transport services and operations were suspended around 10am on Thursday."

The leaves of its officials and employees concerned have also been suspended, he said adding that control rooms have been opened in regional offices to deal with the coming situation.

The maritime ports of Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist danger signal no. seven as severe Cyclonic storm Fani draws nearer.

According to a met office weather bulletin, on Thursday, coastal districts—of Bhola, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirozpur, Jhalakathi, Bagherhat, Khulna, Satkhira—and their offshore islands and chars will also come under danger signal seven.

Meanwhile, the maritime port of Chittagong has been advised to lower local warning signal no. four and hoist danger signal no. six.

The coastal districts of Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur—and their offshore islands and chars—will also come under this danger signal.

The maritime ports of Cox’s Bazar have been advised to keep hoisted local warning signal no. four.
