The storm will turn into a land minor depression while leaving Bangladesh in a few hours

Cyclone Fani, moving further north-northeastwards from Dhaka-Faridpur region, has weakened and turned into a land deep depression, a special bulletin from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said.

The Cyclonic storm was located over Pabna, Tangail and Mymensingh and adjoining regions, around 12pm on Saturday. It will move in a north-northeasterly direction further inland, cross Sylhet, and finally move towards Meghalaya region in India, leaving Bangladesh.

The storm will turn into a land minor depression while leaving Bangladesh in a few hours.

Under its influence, the sky has remained overcast, and rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty or squally wind has continued at many places over the country.

Maximum wind speed might rise up to 50-60km/hr, at many places, and about 40-50km/hr over the North Bay.

Meanwhile, Mongla and Payra maritime ports, Chittagong port, and Cox's Bazar have been advised to lower danger signal no 7, danger signal no 6, and danger signal no 4, respectively, and hoist local cautionary signal no 3, instead.

Under the influence of the land deep depression and the new moon phase, the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Hatiya, Sandwip, Chandpur, Barguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirajpur, Jhalakathi, Bagherhat, Khulna, Satkhira, and their offshore islands and chars, are likely to be inundated by 2-4ft tidal wave.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice.

At a press conference held in the media centre of the Met office around 1pm, director of the Met office, Shamsuddin Ahmed, said how long the people in the Cyclone shelters will be kept indoors depended upon district and local administrations' decisions.

Replying to a query, the director said: "Although the danger signal number has been lowered in the ports, the people in the cyclone shelters might have to stay indoors for a few more hours. It completely depends upon the decision taken by the local and district administration."

Until now, 14 people have been reported dead in eight districts, due to the impact of Cyclone Fani.
