Three girls were raped in Jhenaidah, Habiganj, and Chandpur districts on Friday and Saturday
Despite regular arrests and meting out severe punishments to rapists, incidents continue unabated with at least three more rapes reported over the weekend.
Three girls were raped in Jhenaidah, Habiganj, and Chandpur districts on Friday and Saturday.
In Jhenaidah, a tenth-grade madrasa student was raped in Kaliganj upazila on Friday night.
According to the girl’s father, around 9pm, a local named Al Amin, and his associate abducted the girl to a nearby field and gang raped the tenth-grader in turns throughout the night and left her gagged in the field, with her hands and legs tied.
Kaliganj police station OC, Yunuch Ali, said: "A case is being filed by the girl’s father. We are trying to arrest the suspects. The girl has been sent to Jhenaidah Hospital."
The girl’s father added: "On Friday night, my daughter went missing after she went out to bring a phone charger. We searched for her the whole night but all our efforts were in vain.
"In the morning one of the locals found her lying there in the field with her hands, legs, and mouth tied. We rushed to the spot and rescued her," he added.
In Habiganj, a schoolgirl was raped in Baniachong upazila of Habiganj on Friday night.
The first grade student is battling for her life in critical condition. Doctors said she was bleeding profusely and would need surgery to combat the physical damage.
Locals said, a neighbour, Jahangir Mia, 20, abducted the girl from her house around 8pm and took her to a deserted area and raped her. Hearing her screams, locals came to rescue her, when Jahangir fled the scene.
She was brought to Habiganj Sadar Hospital in critical condition around 1am. The doctors there were unable to stop the profuse bleeding and decided to transfer her to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The police were informed of the matter and they visited the hospital and collected statements.
Baniachong police OC, Rashed Mobarak, said: “We are trying to determine the whereabouts of Jahangir. We are trying to arrest him as soon as possible.”
Dr Arshad Ali, gynaecology department consultant at Habiganj Sadar Hospital, said: “She has wounds that need to be surgically stitched up.”
The girl’s mother and locals demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the rapist.
In Chandpur, a girl with mental disability was gang-raped in Devipur of Shahrasti upazila yesterday.
Police arrested, Fahim, 21, a CNG auto-rickshaw driver, and Jihad, 19, for kidnapping and raping the girl.
Shahrasti police station OC, Shah Alam, said: "The girl’s mother filed a case against Fahim and Jihad. We arrested them and sent them to court. We sent the victim to Chandpur Sadar Hospital for necessary check-ups.
According to locals, the accused reportedly kidnapped and took the girl to a farmhouse in Amujan of Kochua Upazila, and gang-raped her.
When some locals found the girl crying in the farmhouse, they caught the rapists, and beat them up before handing them over to the police.
<Three arrested for rape, two sent to jail>
In Comilla, police arrested a Union Parishad (UP) member and his accomplice and sent them to jail for gang raping a woman, following their confessional court statement.
UP member Nabirul Islam, and his associate Shahid Khan, alias Pakhi, 32, gave their confessional statements before Comilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Rokeya Begum’s court yesterday.
Police arrested Nabirul and Shahid on Friday night in the Pranti market area of Muradnagar upazila.
Police said the rape survivor filed a case against eight suspects with Debidwar police station on Friday afternoon.
According to the case statement, on January 18, eight men abducted the woman to an abandoned house in Shaharpargram of Debidwar upazila, where they confined her for two days and gang raped her.
Debidwar police station OC, Jahirul Anwar, said: “Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused.”
In Rajbari, police arrested a man in a case filed for raping and making a girl with mental disabilities pregnant, in Sadar upazila yesterday.
Police arrested Mintu Mir, 28, and are looking to arrest his sister-in-law Beauty Begum, 40, the other accused.
Rajbari police station Sub-Inspector, Encher Ali, said: “The girl’s sister filed a case on Wednesday, accusing the two under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.”
