A man has been arrested for raping his grand-niece, an eight-year-old child, in Panchagarh.
The arrestee is Abdul Khalek, 62, of Raniganj-Dohoshuho area under the Balram union of the Atwari upazila, confirmed Atwari police OC Md Abdur Razzak.
On Tuesday afternoon, Abdul went to visit his niece (survivor’s mother) at her house in the Bandarpara village of the Balrampur union of the same upazila.
The woman left her daughter with Abdul to get some snacks from a shop. Finding himself alone, he took the opportunity and sexually abused the eight-year-old.
Hearing screams, her mother and neighbours ran to the house and rescued the girl and they captured Abdul.
Later, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Sharmin Sultana – after receiving information – came to the spot with the police and arrested him.
The girl was taken to the Atwari Upazila Health Complex that evening. Later, she was moved to the Panchagarh Sadar Hospital for medical examination.
The girl’s father filed a case against Abdul with the Atwari police station.
On Wednesday, a District Court sent Abdul to jail when police produced him before the court.
