A Tangail BNP leader has been arrested for allegedly raping his grand-niece.
Zulhas Mia was arrested from Mirzapur municipality on Wednesday night. He is the general secretary of Mirzapur BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party).
The court sent Zulhas to jail on Thursday afternoon.
According to the case statement, Zulhas had been abusing his grand-niece for over a year, with the promise of marriage. The last time he abused her on May 6, she told her mother about it.
On Wednesday, she filed a case with Mirzapur police station, accusing Zulhas of rape. He was arrested the same night.
Mirzapur Officer-in-Charge AKM Mizanur Haque said: "We arrested Zulhas after a primary investigation. He has already confessed to the police. Later, he was sent to Tangail jail on Thursday."
The victim has been sent to Tangail General Hospital for medical tests, he added.
