A teenager arrested with drugs reportedly committed suicide inside a police station in Patuakhali district on Wednesday night, just two hours after his detention.
The deceased was Omar Faruque Rayhan, 19, from Kabirkathi in Bakerganj upazila of Barisal, said Mahipur police station Officer in-Charge (OC) Saidul Islam.
The OC said Rayhan was found hanging from the ventilator of a toilet inside Mahipur police station around 11:50pm on Wednesday.
Earlier, police had arrested Rayhan with 103 yaba tablets from the district council office area around 9:45pm, the OC said.
OC Saidul claimed that the youth committed suicide by hanging himself with a towel tied around his neck.
The body was sent to Patuakhali Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, Saidul added.
Meanwhile, an unnatural death case was filed with Mahipur police station in this connection.
Regarding the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police Mahfuzur Rahman said they are investigating whether there was any negligence on part of the police.
If any evidence of negligence is found, stern action will be taken against the person responsible, the police official added.
According to the police, Rayhan was accused in several cases, including drugs, with Barisal's Bakerganj, Jhalakati and Mahipur police stations.
