Suspected drug trader killed in Meherpur 'gunfight'

Police recovered a firearm, 1kg of cannabis and a motorcycle from the scene

A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported "gunfight" between two alleged gangs of drug traders in Gangni upazila, Meherpur.

The incident occurred in Mathpara area of Kormodi village around 1:45am on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Nazmul Hossain, 24, son of Nazrul Islam, hailing from Sohratola village in Gangni upazila.

Gangni police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Harendranath Sarkar told Dhaka Tribune: "On information, members of the Bamundi police camp went to the gunfight spot and, sensing their presence, all the drug traders fled away. 

"Later, the bullet-riddled body of Nazmul, a notorious drug trader of the area, was recovered."

Law enforcement also recovered a firearm, one kilogram of cannabis and a motorcycle from the scene.

Nazmul had five cases filed against him at Gangni police station.
