Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary has instructed police officials to verify drivers' licences, fitness certificates of bus, and other vehicle documents prior to each Eid journey to ensure a hassle-free, and safe journey for home-goers.
The police chief made the statement while addressing a video conference from the police headquarters.
Police officials have been directed to be cautious so that bus helpers are not behind the wheels in absence of drivers during Eid holidays, Md Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general (media & PR) of Bangladesh Police said.
If a vehicle is found without fitness certificate, it will not be allowed on the roads, he said quoting the directive of the police chief.
Policemen were asked to take initiatives so that no vehicle carry passengers on the roof of the bus, added Sohel Rana.
The special measures are to stay in effect from seven days before Eid-ul-Fitr, and last till seven days after the Eid.
Addressing the video conference that was attended by additional IGPs, all metropolitan and range police commissioners, and chief of different police units, the police chief ordered the policemen to maintain zero tolerance policy against extortion on roads and highways across Bangladesh.
A major part of the video conference was regarding extortion in highways, said officials attending the video conference.
The IGP has asked policemen to ensure the highest departmental action if any official is found to be involved in extortion, said an official wishing anonymity.
The police chief also ordered the police officials not to halt movement of any vehicle on the roads and highways without specific reasons.
He further asked CCTV cameras to be installed at different strategic points on highways to prevent extortion, and bring discipline on the roads.
The IGP also asked police officials to remain alert towards prevention of excessive passengers being carried in waterways to avoid any untoward incident. Besides, instructions were also given to take security measures to ensure security on railway routes.
“Ensure stern action so that incidents like stone pelting are not repeated,” said the police chief.
As per directives, officials are also to remain alert concerning collection of zakat elsewhere in the country.
Directives were also given to enhance overall security at residences, gold shop, banks, financial institutions, diplomatic missions, and other important establishments across the country.
