Houses, land in two villages of Dinajpur in poor condition due to mining

Locals living near the Barapukuria coal mine protested on Sunday, seeking compensation for their damaged houses and lands-- resulting from mining work in the area.

Local volunteer organization, "Jibon O Sampad Rokkha Committee", organized the protest rally at Dighipara in Parbatipur upazila.

Protesters said: "Houses in Patrapara and Bashpukur villages near the coal mine are showing cracks in the walls because of the vibrations that are produced from the mining works.

"Locals in the area are living in fear in the risky houses. We demand swift solution, and compensation in this regard," they added.

Protesters warned of tougher movements if they were not provided any solution by June 10.

According to sources, the Barapukuria coal mine had previously acquired around 627 acres of land which were damaged due to mining.

30 acres of  new land in the area gradually impaired as mining expanded beyond the previous series of land acquisitions.
