Almost 8000 vehicles from 23 districts cross this highway during the Eid holidays and the pressure can be 5 times higher than normal

Dhaka-Tangail highway is the second largest highway in Bangladesh. This is the only highway that connects North-West part of Bangladesh to the capital, Dhaka. Millions of people will be travelling this 125km highway to get to their home districts to celebrate Eid holidays. The load is a somewhat higher than normal times.

But, transport workers fear a huge traffic congestion during the upcoming days before Eid, as the highway is still under construction.

The construction of the Dhaka-Tangail Four-lane project is not complete yet. Some new projects have been linked to the original project by increasing the  construction time. The government took the project of upgrading the two-lane highway to four-lane in 2016, and was expected to end in February 2019. But due to the addition of several underpasses, overpasses and two service lanes, the completing time of the project was extended a few times. As the highway is under construction drivers are worried about the large number of vehicles during the upcoming Eid.

The project authority said that all the arrangements have been made to keep this highway free of traffic congestion.

Police said that precautions to resolve traffic congestions on the highway will be taken. Just like last year, CC (close circuit) cameras will be used to reduce traffic congestion.

Almost 8000 vehicles from 23 districts cross this highway during the Eid holidays and the pressure can be 5 times higher than normal.

Police said that every year some unscrupulous transport owners run defective and damaged vehicles to earn more profit. These vehicles stop working middle of the highway and create traffic. Sometimes inefficient drivers, road accidents and excessive loads of vehicles create traffic congestion. Last year over 32 thousand vehicles crossed the highway. It is the highest record of vehicles plying the road.

A driver of Dhaleswari Bus, Rajib Mia said: “The running construction work and recent rains have created ditches everywhere. So traffic congestion is inevitable in Elenga, Rasulpur, Panchbikramhati, Nagarjalpai, Gharinda, Karatia, Pakulla, Hatubhanga, Mirzapur etc areas of Tangail.”

A driver of Chowki Paribahan, Shahid Mia said: “We expect the police to handle the situation with high priority. We face loss as number of passengers decline if the road gets blocked and we need to spend at least seven hours to cross a three hour road.”

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Additional Police (Crime) of Tangail Ahaduzzaman Mia said: “About 700 policemen will be on the highway to resolve traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Tangail highway. The whole area is divided into four sectors; under supervision of mobile police patrol teams and CC cameras. We took every step possible to control the situation.”

The concerned authority officials of the Four-Lane project said that the work of underpasses at Deohata, Mirzapur, Kuni, Kadimdhlaya, Pakullah, Jamurki, Natiyapara, Baikhola, Karatia Hat Bypass, Tartia and Gharinda are still in progress in Tangail. Among them, Deohata, Mirzapur and Gharindar underpass will be opened for use on the occasion of Eid.

Project Manager of Joydebpur-Elenga Four-lane Project Amit Kumar Chakrabarty said: “About 93 percent work of the four-lane highway and 60 percent work of new service lanes have been completed. In addition, 13 underpasses are under construction.”

“The prime minister  inaugurated  four underpasses on May 25. That will hopefully lessen the traffic. Besides, the construction of two fly-overs will end by June 20, 2019. A budget of Tk5,900 crore has been allocated to complete the project. The full four-lane facility will be available from May 27 for Eid travellers. We hope that people would have a sound journey this season,” he added.
