Kaler Kantho journo assaulted in Jamalpur

He was allegedly attacked when he went collect information about forged land registration deed

Jamalpur correspondent of The Daily Kaler Kantho newspaper, Mostofa Monju, was allegedly attacked after he went to collect information about using forged papers for land registration.

A group of people, led by Ward Councillor of Jamalpur 2 and stamp vendor Hasanuzzaman Khan Runu, attacked Monju when he went collection the information from the Sadar sub-registrar office.

Monju has been seriously injured in the attack. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident has sparked outrage among the journalist society in Jamalpur.

According to sub-registrar office sources, deed writer Habibur Rahman, from Dewanpara area of Jamalpur town, recently submitted a registration deed for a land in Shingajani, including a pay order of Tk77,000, to the sub-registrar's office on Monday.

However, Sub-Registrar Shakhawat Hossain found out that Habibur's deed was forged and confiscated his documents. Action is also being taken against Habibur.

On Tuesday, Kaler Kantho reporter Monju went to take a statement from Habibur after confirming the incident with the sub-registrar.

But after he arrived, Ward Councillor Hasanazzuman Khan Runu, his nephew Tuhin Khan, Habibur and Habibur's assistant, started kicking and punching Monju. At one point, they snatched his mobile phone and camera, and removed all information by formatting it.

Hearing the incident, Sadar police station officers went to investigate the scene. Several journalists also went to the sub-registrar's office.

Later in the evening, an emergency meeting was held at the Jamalpur Press Club, where speeches were given by its President Hafiz Raihan Shada, former president and Dainik Janakantha Jamalpur correspondent Azizur Rahman, General Secretary Lutfor Rahman, BTV journalist Mostofa Babul, Somoy TV journalist Jahangir Alam and others.

They strongly protested against the attack, and demanded the perpetrators be brought to book.

A case has been filed with Jamalpur police station in connection with this.
